Let me hear your thoughts. Starting with the 1960s, let us know your opinions on the best team in the state each decade. Here are my two cents.
1960s- Gaffney. The Injuns won 4 state titles during that decade.
1970s- Spring Valley. Several teams come to mind including Summerville and Clinton, but SV won 3 in a row. Clinton won 4 and was runner-up a couple times and Summerville won 2 and was runner-up once, but for me those SV teams '73, '74, '75....great teams.
1980s- Summerville, hands down.... Laurens had a few good teams as did Hartsville, but the Green Wave was methodical and efficient. Like a machine.
1990s- Spartanburg. Doc Davis was the man. Sitterle had good teams at Daniel and had some pressure in 3A from Fairfield Central later in the decade, but Davis won 4 titles in 5 years with the Vikes.
2000s- Byrnes. That was the Rebels decade, and having Gaffney pushing them made them even better.
2010s- Dutch Fork, especially later in the decade. South Pointe was good, so was Northwestern and Byrnes still, but TK came to Dutch Fork and 2010, and played for a title in 2012 and winning his first in SC in 2013 and winning '16, '17, '18, '19 and runner up in '12 and '14. Abbeville was good, but head to head they would not have the horses to beat teams like DF, SP or NW.
2020s- Dutch Fork. Winning 4 out of 5 and runner-up once. Hard to argue. TK has been at DF for 15 seasons, winning 9 titles and runner-up 3 times. 2025 team looks to be another good one.
OK let me hear how wrong I am....lol.

Union 1990's
Abbeville / Dillion in the 2000's but yes I would agree with your teams just based on level of competition and those teams was just overall best in the state! JMO

70s has to go to Woodruff.
State champs:
1975
1976
1977
1978
1980
State runner up:
1972
1979
That was unmatched over the course of that decade.

Re: Best Team in State each decade
Best team... I meant the top team in the state that decade, regardless of classification- that's my bad, clarification next time... Woodruff in the 70s was great of course, so was Clinton etc...but again, why we have classifications- I think Woodruff may have been 3A early in the decade- and no titles, not until they were 2A did they start that run. SV was a machine those three years and they both won titles in 1975, but could Woodruff beat SV in 1975? Your argument could work for Abbeville the last two decades, but A-town beating a DF team? No....I think DF's game against Oceanside this season made that point. There are those Abbeville homers that say they could beat DF, but I know that is just school pride talking and not reality- teams like DF, NW, Summerville, Irmo, Spartanburg, Gaffney etc are just too big, too fast, too strong, too deep and well-coached. Those type seasons where a small school is best in the state are few...some Clinton teams in the 70s maybe and the Woodruff team with that QB back in the early 80s...BUT could they have beaten a McKissick Green Wave team that year?....maybe not.
I think Woodruff, BHP, Dillon, MVP...everyone in 3A needs to focus on Oceanside this coming season. The Landsharks lost some seniors, but they have some horses coming back...their QB, RB and WR are no joke, and they have good linemen to boot. They are talented and well-coached. Good luck to the Wolverines- someone needs to hammer MVP. They lost their QB and that will hurt them. The RB is good, but you put enough in the box you can handle him. He seems no better than the BHP RB from what I saw. Good Luck and Go Get'em!!

Re: Best Team in State each decade
This is about to be shocking but I agree with you about the upcoming season. Woodruff is loaded. 16 starters back and 9 on defense with arguably the top 2027 RB in the state. MVP will be good with their RB McGill and some playmakers around him on offense. BHP will take a step back without Henderson. He was far too much of their offense. I personally believe Woodruff and MVP are head and shoulders better than anyone else in the upperstate. Your upperstate champ will be us or them. They also graduate 8 starters on defense.DFOLDMAN wrote: ↑Thu Mar 13, 2025 7:43 amBest team... BUT, you are spot on. Until someone steps to them and beats them, Oceanside with their QB has to be considered the favorite until otherwise proven.

Re: Best Team in State each decade
… 1980 for example is considered the’80s by most of the civilized world. 1971-1981 is 11 years or 11 seasons…and a decade for most of the civilized world is 10 years, not 11- … why do I bandy words with you guys… smh
